Ruben Studdard

Sorry For 2004 by Alison Bartow

Cast:

Jason, Loves Ruben Studdard, on a date

Meg, Also on a date, has normal feelings about Ruben Studdard

Setting: A bedroom, Meg is sitting on the bed and Jason is standing nearby pacing a little.

Meg

I had such a good time tonight at dinner, I’m glad you invited me to come up. (looks over at Jason) Come here, why are you pacing around the bed?

Jason

(Nervously)

I… it’s just…

Meg

Come over here

Jason

It would help if we could play some music

Meg

Oh sure, yeah that sounds nice. I wouldn’t mind a little mood music

Jason

(expression changing from nervous to excited)

Oh yeah?! Ok great, I have the perfect thing

(Jason goes to a shelf in his room and pulls out a large ipod video, loudly drags his finger around in a circle until he finds the right track and plugs it into his stereo. We hear the audio of “Sorry 2004”)

Meg

(is listening confused)

What are we listening to here?

(Jason is really feeling himself, this is clearly his song)

Jason

Only the best for you, It’s a classic Ruben Studdard!

Meg

…Oh?

Jason

Sorry 2004? Back when he was runner up on American Idol Season 2? Oh I see (beat) maybe you’re looking for more of a deep cut, not one of the obvious hits. I got just what you need.

(Jason goes back to the ipod and cycles through some songs, this time playing “Flying Without Wings” He goes back to grooving)

Meg

And this one is-

Jason

Ruben Studdard.

Meg

Ruben Studdard. Yeah.

(Jason gets into a choreographed dance number performing with various house-hold items, he is doing some very sensual old school R&B music video moves now, Meg is watching eyes wide.)

Meg

Hey Jason, (beat) maybe I could pick a song for us to listen to?

Jason

(stops dancing)

Oh, oh yeah of course!

(turns off the music)

What are you thinking, “Together”? Maybe a little “I Need an Angel”?

Meg

(Gets up out of the bed and walks over to the ipod)

You’ll see.

(she nods for him to sit on the bed and then scrolls through the ipod and puts on “Invisible”)

(Meg starts soulfully dancing now, really getting into the music more and more)

Jason

(Now watching with his eyes wide)

Is this..?

Meg

Clay Aiken, yeah!

Jason

(Gets up and turns off the ipod)

Get the fuck out of my house.

(blackout)
